I've recently seen that Sadowsky has stopped using the old retainers bars on their 5 string basses.

I remember that the retainers were always set up with springs between the neck and the bar.

I read around and one person's thoughts about the springs is that they made string changes easier.

Did these retainers come from the supplier with the springs, or did they have to be bought aftermarket?

The springs came with the retainer from Sadowsky. However, the new retainer is even easier to change strings.
Its all about the improvements!!!

I looked around and it seems that the springs under the bar retainer are pickup height springs.

Am I right on this?

Yes, we cut down humbucker pickups springs.
